Chapter 688: Extra Story 101: I Feel Pity for Mu Cidian (Grand Finale Part Four)

Wanwan had fallen asleep.

In just over ten minutes, Mu Cidian had managed to soothe Wanwan to sleep.

This was something that neither she nor the moon nurse could achieve at present.

Mu Cidian had left for two days, yet Wanwan could still remember him.

Lightly, he put the sleeping Wanwan down next to Xin Zaozao.

Once he had placed Wanwan down, Xin Zaozao assumed that Mu Cidian would leave. To her surprise, however, he went straight to her bathroom.

He didn’t shower in her room. Usually, he would use the communal bathroom outside.

Xin Zaozao restrained herself and eventually didn’t say anything.

All her attention was currently on Wanwan. She gently lay next to her sleeping daughter, holding her softly in her arms. Soon, she too closed her eyes and slowly drifted off to sleep.

When Mu Cidian came out of the shower, both Xin Zaozao and Wanwan were sound asleep.

Xin Zaozao kept close to Wanwan, fearing her sudden disappearance, she didn’t want Wanwan to be out of her sight even for a second.

He understood her feelings.

He too was scared, fearing something else might happen to Wanwan. He wished he could keep holding and protecting her, not letting the incident happen again. It simply couldn’t happen again!

He gently lay down beside Wanwan.

Wanwan lay in the middle, with Xin Zaozao and Mu Cidian on either side of her.

His eyes were locked onto Xin Zaozao, who seemed to have finally fallen asleep.

Given what had happened to Wanwan, it probably wasn’t easy for her to sleep deeply.

Mu Cidian felt a surge of emotion.

For just a moment, he had an overpowering urge to forget everything, to take Xin Zaozao fiercely, to vent his emotions onto her with all his strength, to make her feel his presence, and intentionally cause her pain!

But … But in the end, even in madness, he couldn’t bear to hurt her.

He knew very well that if he had given in to his impulse just now, he would have despised himself even more.

His throat bobbed as he worked to suppress his emotions.

He was thinking about the future.

That this would be the way things were from now on.

The next day.

When Xin Zaozao woke up, Mu Cidian was not in her bed.

She was aware that he had slept with them last night. After all, Wanwan woke up twice a night, and when she was awakened, she saw that Mu Cidian was already holding Wanwan against her body, helping her nurse.

After nursing, Wanwan went back to sleep, and Mu Cidian lay down beside them and was soon asleep as well.

Eventually, Xin Zaozao too fell asleep.

But at this moment, Mu Cidian was already gone.

Wanwan was still sound asleep beside her.

Xin Zaozao just sat there with Wanwan, not wanting to leave her side for even a single step.

All her energy these past few days had been focused on Wanwan. She was truly afraid, terrified of something happening to her again.

There was a knock at the door from outside.

Xin Zaozao answered.

The moon nurse opened the door, “Did we wake you, Madame?”

“No, I’m already awake.”

“Oh. Is Wanwan awake yet?”

“She’s still sleeping.”

“Would you like to get up and have some breakfast now?” asked the moon nurse.

“I’ll stay with Wanwan until she wakes up.”

“Let me sit with Wanwan for you, I’ll call you when she wakes.”

“No need, you go have your meal.”

The moon nurse looked as if she wanted to say something but seeing that Xin Zaozao didn’t want to talk, she held her tongue.

Heading to the dining room, she said to Mu Cidian, “Madame said she will stay with Wanwan and won’t have breakfast yet.”

Mu Cidian nodded without any unusual expression.

Looking at Mu Cidian, the moon nurse couldn’t help but ask, “Sir, are you going to divorce Madame?”

Mu Cidian looked up.

“I saw the divorce agreement on your computer,” the moon nurse quickly explained after revealing this, “I didn’t mean to pry, I was tidying up and your computer was on.”

“It’s nothing.”

“But, are you really going to divorce Madame? I think Madame’s behaviour is only extreme because of what happened to Wanwan. It will pass after a while. Women are typically more fragile and need time to recover,” the moon nurse couldn’t help but advise.

“Yes, I know,” replied Mu Cidian, giving a slight nod.

“So, you’re not going to divorce?” asked the moon nurse.

“I never planned on divorcing,” said Mu Cidian straightforwardly.

The divorce agreement she saw was with Lei Qian. He had retrieved it to cooperate with the police investigation and provide them all information related to Lei Qian – it was not a notice of his intention to divorce Xin Zaozao.

“What about that agreement?” the moon nurse asked in surprise.

“It’s not with Xin Zaozao,” Mu Cidian answered.

“Is that so?” The moon nurse stared at Mu Cidian, “I thought you were going to divorce Madame. I even mentioned it to her.”

Eating his toast, Mu Cidian paused.

“I thought… I thought…” the moon nurse appeared regretful, “I’ll go clarify this to Madame right away.”

“How did she react?” Mu Cidian stopped the moon nurse, casually biting on his toast, appearing completely calm.

“She didn’t seem to react at all,” the moon nurse recalled, “she even told me not to meddle in your affairs.”

Mu Cidian was drinking milk.

He had his suspicions already.

Perhaps Xin Zaozao was waiting to divorce him.

“No matter what, you can’t let her get the wrong idea that you want a divorce. Won’t that make your relationship even worse?” The nanny said, readying herself to leave.

“No need,” Mu Cidian called to her, “Whether we divorce or not, it’s the same to her. There’s no need to waste time trying to convince her otherwise.”

“But…”

“After I finish eating, I will have to step out. Xin Zaozao might still not want to let go of Wanwan. Do your best to be proactive, try to help her look after Wanwan, and let her slowly get used to handing over the baby to others.”

“Okay,” the nanny quickly nodded and then hesitated before asking, “Did something happen, sir?”

Under normal circumstances, the master didn’t tend to go out.

“Hmm, a few things have come up,” Mu Cidian replied briefly.

The nanny did not ask more questions.

It did, however, strike her that the distance between him and Xin Zaozao was palpable.

They never seemed to share their personal matters with each other.

By the time Xin Zaozao got out of bed with Wanwan, Mu Cidian had already left.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om

Seeing that Wanwan was awake, the nanny quickly stepped forward to take the baby.

Xin Zaozao reflexively refused.

“Madam, I’m right in front of you, I won’t move a step away. You have your meal first,” the nanny urged warmly.

After hesitating for a moment, Xin Zaozao reluctantly handed Wanwan to the nanny.

The nanny clung to Wanwan like she was afraid Xin Zaozao wouldn’t trust her. As a result, she kept Wanwan close whenever Xin Zaozao went somewhere, always staying within a three-step radius.

With that, Xin Zaozao indeed began to ease her worries.

However, she would still occasionally take Wanwan and play with her.

The nanny muttered reluctantly to herself, “Sir specifically asked before he left for me to help take care of Wanwan a bit more. It seems I’ll have to let him down.”

Xin Zaozao continued to play with Wanwan without answering the nanny’s complaints.

“Sir really cares about you,” the nanny said. “He fears that you’ll tire yourself out looking after Wanwan. Can’t you feel his concern for you, madam?”

Xin Zaozao still did not reply, pretending not to hear her.

The nanny let out a sigh.

Despite the mistress not being hard to get along with, why was she so stern and uncompromising when it came to her relationship with the master?

She couldn’t understand it.

Just as she was about to continue muttering, Xin Zaozao’s phone rang.

Xin Zaozao glanced at the caller.

The nanny said, “Let me hold Wanwan. I promise I won’t stray from your sight.”

Xin Zaozao smiled at the nanny’s guarantee.

She nodded and handed Wanwan to her.

The nanny sat next to Xin Zaozao.

Xin Zaozao answered the phone, “Song Lifei.”

“Are you feeling better?”

“I’m okay,” Xin Zaozao replied.

“That’s good.”

“Did you call for something in particular?”

“It’s about work. I initially thought that since you’ve just been through something, you should rest more. So, I called Mu Cidian. He told me that from now on, I should directly consult you about Xin Group’s affairs and not involve him.”

“Okay,” Xin Zaozao responded, “I won’t be able to go into work for a few days. If you need anything, just call me.”

“Before we discuss work, I want to ask if there is a disagreement between you and Mu Cidian?” questioned Song Lifei.

Xin Zaozao instinctively tightened her grip on her phone.

“I’ve always believed that Mu Cidian wronged you and that his family hurt you, so it’s only natural that you resent him. But now, I suddenly find Mu Cidian quite pitiful.”

“Song Lifei…”

“Let me finish,” Song Lifei said, “As a man, and one with upstanding principles, I can’t stand it anymore. I really need to stand up for Mu Cidian on this one. If you don’t allow me to say my piece, I will resign.”

“…” Xin Zaozao felt threatened by Song Lifei’s words.

Right now, with her absence from the company, the only person capable of managing the business was Song Lifei.

She didn’t trust anyone else.

“Alright, go on. I’m listening,” Xin Zaozao gave in.

She would just hear him out anyway.

Upon hearing Xin Zaozao’s agreement, Song Lifei stated seriously, “Mu Cidian must have loved you for many years now, probably starting a long time ago. It’s even plausible to think he fell in love with you while he was deceiving you. All these years, he’s been hurting you—have you ever thought about how that makes him feel? Imagine loving someone but having to hurt them and make them resent you so much. It must be painful, right? If I were in his shoes, I would be in agony. I love you very much now, so anything that upsets you, even the slightest thing like a tear falling from your eye, I wouldn’t be able to bear it. I’d hate myself so much I’d think of killing myself. But Mu Cidian, against his conscience, did this for so many years! A man less tolerant than him would have gone mad ages ago!”

Xin Zaozao didn’t respond.

With no response from Xin Zaozao, Song Lifei continued, “Fortunately, before he went mad, he chose to let go. He chose to resist pressure from his mother and decided to return everything to you. I thought that would be it, that both of you would move on. After all, Mu Cidian went to jail and I expected him to separate from you upon his release. However, you ended up together again. I don’t know who initiated it, but I know for sure that it was Mu Cidian who persevered, enduring strong opposition from his mother and indifference from you. I don’t know why you broke up along the way, and I don’t know why Mu Cidian got involved with Lei Qian, but I do know that when Mu Cidian discovered you were pregnant with his child, he came back to you again, Xin Zaozao. Haven’t you noticed that whenever something happens to you, Mu Cidian returns without hesitation?”

Xin Zaozao pursed her lips tightly.

She didn’t speak, but her eyes reddened slightly.

“Finally, you married, had a child and lived a blissful life together. But can one Lei Qian undo all of that? Is your relationship so fragile? Are your feelings for Mu Cidian that feeble? Whenever something happens, is your first instinct not to confide in Mu Cidian or solve problems with him, but instead to drive him away, to wipe him from your world? Xin Zaozao, don’t you think you’ve been rather selfish in this relationship?”

“I’ve always resisted having this relationship,” Xin Zaozao responded, word by word.

She had always been reluctant to be in this relationship, that’s why she always sought ways to separate from him.

“Resistance? If you really had such resistance, would you have waited for him all these years? Would you have rejected all other men while refusing to reject him? Xin Zaozao, if you really don’t like Mu Cidian, then fine, it would just mean he’s the one in love and everything he’s done is his own punishment. But the fact is, you like Mu Cidian. How long are you going to deceive others and yourself? How can you push him away so cruelly when you love him so much? Xin Zaozao, what exactly are you scared of?”
