Chapter 99 The Poison Experts and the Investigation
99 The Poison Experts and the Investigation
Lyle and the others made their way to the busy streets of Orsvald.
The city was as bustling as always, even though there was a clear change in the atmosphere of the city thanks to the events of last night.
A major noble house in the city had been wiped out, and the people of the city still had no idea what had happened. Only those in power knew the whole story and how Morn simply arrived at dinner before using some sort of poison that exploded into a poisonous cloud that killed everyone that was inside the room.
Experts were called over to determine what poison was used, but even those that were well-proficient in the arts of poison couldn't tell what it was from the cloud. If they had a bit of the original vial and its contents, then it would have been much easier, but most of the poison had already dissipated when they arrived, leading to many of them scratching their heads as to what was used.
Even though they were well-proficient in the arts and could be called experts, the most powerful amongst them was a fledging Golden Knight while the others were all Silver Knights. n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
For them to easily identify a poison that was concocted by an archmage that had the element of poison was nearly impossible. Even if they had the original vial, it would still pose a challenge as, unlike Lyle, they didn't have all the manuscripts that Ilya had left that talked in great detail about the poisons.
Lyle was only able to identify the vials thanks to the knowledge he gained from the beginner-level book of poisons and the manuscripts. With the knowledge he had, and the detailed descriptions of the many poisons from that manuscript, he was able to identify many of the poisons and how they worked, otherwise he would have been completely lost as to what poison did what as well.
The poisonous cloud lasted for hours before fully dissipating.
The experts took some blood samples from the victims before leaving the mansion and letting the servants take the bodies as they had come to the conclusion that the area and the bodies were now safe.
The poison had done its job and had completely disappeared, not leaving a single trace in the area. They hoped that they could identify just what had happened by doing tests on the blood they had gotten, but they had wished to do a full autopsy on the bodies, only to be rejected by the leaders of the guards of the mansion.
They were allowed to take the bodies of the servants and guards, plus Morn, but the other bodies were to be left alone.
The servants of the mansion were to take the bodies of the deceased servants and guards and place them inside special carriages the experts had brought with them. After that, the experts would all go together to a lab prepared by the Rain family in order to do further testing.
The Rain family had even invited some more notable experts from nearby cities, but it would take them a while to get to Orsvald and there was only so much they would be able to do after arriving.
The only way to identify what the enemy had used was to do many tests on the bodies, and the bodies of Lordic and his wife were instrumental in that as they were much more powerful than the other victims and it would be highly beneficial for the experts if they could do an autopsy since their bodies would have acted differently compared to the others.
That would increase the chances of them identifying the poison, but the guards would have none of that. They would not allow the experts to cut apart the master and mistress of the house, even though doing so would only allow them to more easily identify the poison used and perhaps find the culprit.
In the minds of the guards and the captains, Lordic and his wife were not to be disrespected like that, even if they were dead, their bodies were to be treated with the utmost respect and a funeral was to be held.
The same went for their children, except for Morn whose actions had brought great hatred from everyone. Nobody liked him much in the past, but none would have ever in their life thought that the oldest son of the Holad family that barely had any talent would do such a thing.
His parents and siblings had never done anything bad to him, they had actually done the exact opposite, his parents supported him in everything he did and did their best to help him while his siblings, although not caring that much for him, would never allow anyone to talk ill of him and would always show the proper respects their older sibling deserved.
A demon, a psychopath, a talentless monster that shouldn't have existed in this world.
Those were the terms the servants and guards used any time they mentioned Morn from now on.
The captains of the guards, who were all Silver Knights, alongside the right-hand man of Lordic, a Golden Knight, had started investigating Morn as morning came.
They went to his mansion, only to find all the thugs present there dead. There were none left alive, and even though some thugs were not present in the mansion when Lyle had slaughtered them previously, the ones that had shown up after the massacre all fled from the scene immediately after seeing all the dead bodies.
Most actually had no idea who Morn really was, so even though they had heard of the deaths of the Holad family, the thugs that were still alive were yet to connect the dots, and probably never will do so as Lyle and the others were not going to let them live for much longer.
Lyle actually wanted to stay in the mansion and wait for the remaining thugs to arrive before slaughtering them, but he realized quickly that there was no chance the guards from the Holad family would leave the mansion alone and would probably come there soon, which they did.
That posed a slight problem for Lyle as he didn't wish for the guards to capture the thugs and interrogate them as that could lead to them knowing about Olman. Thanks to his ability, Wan's identity was never revealed to the thugs and they actually possessed no knowledge of him.
But Olman was different, he was the one that always managed the thugs and their actions, so all of them knew of his face. Some even thought he was the true leader of the organization, not Morn who many had only briefly seen a couple of times when he would enter and leave the mansion.
Even though some didn't know who he was, the aura around him was strange and powerful enough to make them afraid merely by looking at him, which led to none daring to stand in his way.
Upon going to where the many weapon stores in the city, Lyle entered one he was familiar with.
He entered with all three of his servants and flashed the stone to the store clerk, letting him know who he was since the store was one of a couple that was directly connected with the organization.
He and the other three all entered through a hidden door before another clerk came to them and showed them the many weapons inside.
The hidden store inside was larger and held more weapons than the one outside. It was merely a front, but there were still some good weapons to be found there.
Inside, however, the quantity and quality of the weapons were higher, so Lyle brought his men to browse and pick a weapon for themselves.
Adam already had a weapon and armor that was suitable for him, so there was no need to buy him anything new. Even though buying them new weapons and armor with every Tier they managed to reach was going to cost Lyle more than simply buying them higher quality weapons that they could use later on, it was very important for him to do so since overly relying on powerful weapons and armor was simply going to be detrimental to their growth.
He also needed to go to another store after this one in order to change the look of four of the ten armor sets he had gotten from stealing the contents of the carriage.
The armor of the red guards of the young duke was simply too eye-catching and recognizable, so Lyle needed to change that in order not to be found out by anyone.
He would then give them to Adam and the other two, but with strict orders to only use them when their lives were in grave danger. The armor was different from those that they had now and it would actually be bound to them.
Only after their deaths could someone else wear them, and the ones that the merchant had managed to get were all in storage and had not been used by anyone in the past, they were there because Orsted wanted to get more guards in the future, but before he was able to do so, he was killed by Lyle.
What do you think?
