Chapter 64 Now, Let's Get To Work
64 Now, Let's Get To Work
"Good morning, beautiful." I greeted my McLaren Senna as I walked towards it. The sun hit it in such a way that it looked like it had a spotlight above it.
I entered the car, placing my bag on the passenger's seat. I started the car and it roared under me and I couldn't help but feel like a man riding a dragon into battle.
I took a moment to look out my window at the clear blue sky. It was a beautiful day.
Even if it was storming, I would've still called it a beautiful day but I was even happier that for once, it felt like the universe had aligned itself just for me.
I began humming to myself as I shifted gears and pulled out of my driveway. I glanced at the clock. It was almost noon.
I'd spent most of the morning making sure I wasn't dreaming and basking in my new billionaire status. Besides, I couldn't be seen giggling like a school girl in my office.
Fortunately, I'd been able to get myself under control. Well, mostly. After all, I was still humming a Taylor Swift song. Taylor Swift of all people!
However, I had responsibilities to attend to. Sunset Inn wasn't going to build itself and as it's CEO, I had to be there to show my employees that I had everything under control. Well, coming to work late after a scandal probably wouldn't project that image but I had something planned to lift their spirits.
As I joined the highway, my phone rang. The hands-free system flashed the name of my assistant across the display. I tapped the steering wheel to answer.
"Tom. Talk to me." I said, my voice carrying the smug confidence of a man on top of the world.
"Mr. Voss." He said, excitement in his voice. I immediately grinned. Was it good news? "I have great news."
"Aha!"
"Sir?"
"Nothing. Continue."
"Yes, sir. I have good news. The city council has dropped its investigation into the Crownsborough property."
"Did they now?" The grin on my face widened.
"Yes, sir. It turns out it was all a misunderstanding. Some misfiled paperwork made it look worse than it was. The investigation has been officially closed."
I laughed, relief coloring my tone. The system was truly a work of art. What was I expecting? It was literally a heavenly gift.
The system was working fast, solving the problems as fast as it had created them. At least, I can now rest easy knowing two problems were gone. First, my loan with the bank and now this.
"Perfect." I focused back on the call. "Send out a statement to the press. Keep it simple and professional." n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
"Of course, sir. Anything else?"
"Yes. Gather all the staff in the downstairs auditorium. I'll be there in fifteen minutes."
"Yes, sir."
I ended the call, my eyes never having left the road.
This was exactly what my staff needed. A public victory that would show them that they had a leader who could weather storms and come out smelling like roses.
They needed confidence and if confidence was anything, it was contagious.
As I drove, my mind wandered to Oliver Adams. I couldn't help but wonder how he was doing. Has his father taken steps? How had his brother reacted to all of this?
He was still gunning for me and I wondered how the system would solve the issue. I was more than happy to watch it play fairy godmother.
My phone rang again, breaking me out of my thoughts. I glanced at the screen. It was Lincoln.
Finally! My reward is here.
I answered the call. "Lincoln, what's the word?"
"Good news, Mr. Voss." He said with his deep voice, professional as always. "You've fulfilled the requirements to open another clause in your mother's will."
I grinned. "Another clause, huh? And what's this one about?"
"We'll discuss that at the reading. Where would you like it to take place?"
"Come to my office at Sunset Inn." I said. "How about at three?"
"That's fine." He said. "See you then."
The call ended and I shook my head, chuckling to myself. The day just kept getting better.
As I pulled into the office parking lot, I checked the time. Eleven fifty-eight. Right on schedule.
I parked the Senna in the spot closest to the entrance, adjusted my suit and made my way inside.
It was a short walk to the auditorium and I stopped just outside, taking a moment to perfect the persona I would be portraying.
Calm and collected. Like everything was under control. I didn't even have to pretend as that was actually what I was feeling.
I walked into the auditorium, the murmur of the already seated staff fading away as I came to stand before them.
I didn't bother with the stage as they weren't so much as to require a microphone to speak to.
"Uncertainty has a way of seeping into everything, doesn't it? It makes us ask questions. Questions like, 'Are the allegations true?' 'Will Sunset Inn collapse?' and the most important, 'What will happen to me?'"
I paused, surveying the auditorium. The room was silent, all eyes on me.
"Well, I'm here to tell you this. You don't have to worry. The investigation into our Crownsborough property has been resolved. It was nothing more than a clerical error. And as of today, we're back on track."
They already knew that and I could see a few of them smiling but this wasn't enough.
"But that's not all." I said, smiling. "I know that uncertainty can breed fear and fear can be paralyzing."
"That's why I've taken steps to ensure that Sunset Inn remains a place of stability and growth. It is with great pleasure that I announce that as of now, I've secured an additional two hundred million dollars in funding to kickstart the entire project."
They began to murmur among themselves, their faces morphing from relief to excitement.
"And to show my appreciation for your hard work and dedication during these trying times, I'm announcing a raise in your salaries, effective immediately."
There was a shocked silence before someone started clapping and a few seconds later, the room erupted in applause.
I grinned, enjoying it. It was like I was the main character in a book. Given the presence of the system, I probably was.
"Thank you." I said, raising a hand to quiet them. "Thank you for sticking with us. Thank you for believing in this vision. Together, we'll make Sunset Inn the benchmark for luxury hospitality. Now, let's get to work."
